award-winning author, playwright and performer, Alison Wearing and, from Guadalajara, Mexico, virtuoso multi-instrumentalist Charly Peña.

— Margaret Gallagher, CBC Radio One, Vancouver

“…a magical night of songs and story telling.”
— Lightwaves, Issue 5
 “Edge, Intelligence, Heart and Soul”
“Jarmo Jalava writes songs rich in whimsy and wonder….think of Bruce Cockburn’s crisp melodicism and Daniel Lanois’s low-burn intensity—but there is also a fresh voice. Jalava has edge and intelligence, heart and soul. His music stays with you.”
— Charles Foran, music reviewer for The National Post.

“Once he loses his teeth…” Definitely Not The Opera, CBC Radio 1

– Sook-Yin Lee, DNTO, CBC Radio 1

“Rich, Contemplative and at times heartbreaking…” Shambhala
“Jarmo Jalava and Alison Wearing have often delighted us with their performances. Their joyful presence and rich, contemplative, and at times heartbreaking, music has been a boon to our community. An evening with Jarmo and Alison is a gift. I recommend their concerts most highly.”
— Erica Cohen, Director, Shambhala Center, Tepoztlan, Mexico

“So evocative and such an amazing sensory trip”
Of all the events that took place this weekend, all of which were great, none had a greater impact or resonance for me than [Jarmo Jalava and Alison Wearing]. I find myself trying to recall as much as I possibly can of [the] ‘performance’ for I found it so evocative and such an amazing sensory trip. If ever I wanted to re-think or re-experience Canada it would be through [their] eyes and voices!”
– Bridget Estavira, co-owner Cafe Literario La Sombra del Sabino (Literary Cafe), and organizer of Festival Canadiana 2010, Tepoztlan, Mexico

Two weeks left at the Farmers’ Market

September 25, 2011

This is a reminder that there are only two weeks of Farmers’ Market left in Paisley. For those you who never have been, it takes place behind the arena on Saturdays from 9-1 and we have given away at least $50 worth of FREE locally grown produce or locally created product every week this year.

Our focus this month is apples and at the “every week” hot food booth, many apple dishes and drinks will be made available for you. Keyzers’ Fruit Farm will be bringing many varieties of apples for your freezers. Donna Douquette, Sandra Ransome and probably others will be making apple pies and other treats for the next two weeks. Remember the pumpkin tarts that were here last year, made by the Rural Gardener? If you have ever tasted them, I know you will be back.

On the last week (October 8th) we invite everyone in the area who has food or crafts to sell to come out as a vendor. We will waive the 50% food vendor ratio that day to encourage a large showing on the lot and help you all get ready for Christmas. If you know anyone who sells locally grown or created product, please invite them to contact me at 519-353-6021. The weekly vendor fee (on October 8th) will be dropped to just $15.00.

Thank-you for your support in 2011 – this thanks goes to all vendors and customers. We deeply appreciate your care for the future of your health, our village and local farmers.

Figure Skating Season Begins: You can help!

September 14, 2011

It’s time!

The 2011/2012 Skating Season is ready to begin! And finally, the registration and general club info you have been waiting for is finally here!!!!!!

Please take a moment to read the two attachments, and forward on to anyone you think might be interested in the Paisley Skating Club this year. Here are some highlights for you, and I would ask that you read carefully as there are important dates listed below!

We are thrilled to welcome Coach Sarah Hutton and Coach Janine Gregg back to the Paisley Club again this year! We are very fortunate to have such amazing Coaches in our Paisley Club!

Canskate lessons will begin on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving….Tuesday, October 11, 2011. Canskaters are the first 6 levels of skating, and new skaters are welcome! The skating times are the same as last year….levels 2 through 6 will be on the ice from 5:15 till 6pm. Our level 1 skaters will be skating from 5:30 till 6pm, again the same as last year. Registration will be held from 6pm till 7pm on Tuesday October 4th. The registration form is attached. Fill it out and bring it with you to the registration night or the first night of skating.

However, new this year….each skater MUST be registered and dues paid PRIOR to being allowed to go out on the ice. Arran/Elderslie has approved “early ice” again this year, and we are pleased to be able to offer our senior skaters with 4 nights of skating prior to the official start of our season. This “early ice” will be on Sept 27, Sept 29, Oct 4, and Oct 6 from 5:30 till 7pm. Please remember this is for our skaters who have completed all levels of the canskate program…..the folks working on their skills and dances, who normally skate from 6pm till 8pm during the regular season. If you are not sure if this is you or not, simply call one of the executive members listed on the document attached, or email me back for clarification!

We are still looking for volunteer help for our canskate program – any parents who would like to assist our coaches would be more than welcome! Please let me know if you are interested, and we will connect you with the coaching staff and be sure to have you involved in the Training Night! In addition, any students who would like to be a Program Assistant, remember there is a $50 credit to your skating fees in appreciation for your help. Or if you know of someone looking for fulfill their high school volunteer hours, this is a great way to complete the requirement!

Your Skating Club Executive worked hard to make our financial numbers work, and we are thrilled to share that registration fees are not changing from last year. Our fundraising requirements are awesome this year as well, and that info is included in the documents attached. Thanks for your support of the Paisley Skating Club!
