Paisley Health Clinic Rapidly Taking Shape

May 29, 2009

A s work progresses on the new Paisley Health Clinic, this may be a good time to review the whole idea of Family Health Teams and how the clinic will function with the variety of health care providers who will be  available to rostered patients.
What is a Family Health Team
(FHT)?
The Brockton and Area Family Health Team is one of 150 FHT’s being established in the Province of Ontario. A Family Health Team is an approach to primary health care that brings together different healthcare  providers to co-ordinate the highest possible quality of care for you – the patient. Designed to give doctors support f r om othe r c ompleme nta r y professionals, most Family HealthTeams will consist of doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners and other health care professionals who work collaboratively, each utilizing their experience and skills so that you receive the very best care, as close to home as possible. Will I still get to see my doctor? Yes. FHT’s are a group approach to health care where your doctor will be able to focus on your complex medical problems but you’ ll have access to different health care professionals according to your needs. How do I make an appointment with the Family Health Team? Contact you family physician’s office for a referral for any of the Family Health Team services. The Brockton and Area Family Health Team includes: Family Doctors, Nur se P ract it ioners , Hea lth Educa tor s , Soc ia l Wor ker s , Dieticians, Clinical Pharmacists, Chiropodists, and Administrative Staff providing primary health care for you and your family. So what is a Nurs e Practitioner, & what can they do?A Nurse Practitioner is a registered nurse with advanced university education, who is able to assess, diagnose and treat patients within a defined scope of practice. Working in collaboration with your doctor, she may perform physical checkups, write prescriptions and order tests, as well as offer treatment for many illnesses. What about the Health Educator?         “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” – applies to many things, including your health. Our Health Educators promote healthy lif e s tyles to pre ve nt the development of disease and to bettermanage existing chronic conditions. They are Registered Nurses who will help you to recognize and reduce the potential risk factors that lead to disease. Education and support are provided in several areas such as Diabetes, Smoking Cessation, and Exercise. What’s a Chiropodist? “Keeping your feet healthy” is the goal of the Family Health Team Chiropodist. Chiropodists specialize in the recognition, assessment, treatment, and ongoing care of the feet. The Chiropodist has many skills and techniques that help patients eliminate foot pain, gain mobility, and maintain healthy feet. The Social Worker? Our Social Worker offers individual, marital and family counselling to assist you in addressing the issues that are impacting your life. Areas of interest and expertise include: ADHD, Depression, Sexual Abuse, Gr ief Counse lling, Parenting
Strategies, and Anger Management A Dietician? “you are what you eat”. It sounds straightforward, but with so much information about nutrition out there it can be difficult to determine what’s right for you. Since many medical conditions can be affected by your diet, it’s important that you eat the right food. Our dietarian can help you develop a nutrition care plan that’s best suited for you, one that will help you maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. What wil l the Clinical Pharmacist do? The Pharmacists’ role on the Family Health Team is to provide education and medication consultations to patients. Patients who are on multiple medications or have chronic condit ions (diabetes, hypertension) may benefit from a consult. This consultation will help you to better understand your medications and address any concerns you may have (when &
how to take your medication). Pharmacists will also provide drug information to the other members of the Family Health Team.

If you are not a rostered patient of Dr. Paul McArthur, Dr. Susan McArthur, Dr. Michael Gill, Dr. RJ Creighton, Dr. Philip James, or Dr. G. Bajurny, now would be a good time to get registered. Doctor Jacques Simenhoff will be joining the Brocton and Area group in the fall, and the longer you delay, the further down the waiting list you will be. Call 519-378-0727 (toll free from Paisley) to register. Paisley Health Clinic Rapidly Taking ShapeThis is how the Clinic looked on June 26, wi th the windows just installed.

Healthcare Keeps Getting Closer to Home

May 24, 2009

June 2008

The big news for the Paisley Health Clinic this month came not from the building site on the south end of town, but from Brockton, where the, Family Health Team Committee’s doctor recruitment efforts have paid off. Doctor Jacques Simenhoff, a family physician currently practicing in British Columbia, will be joining the Brockton and Area FHN in the early fall. He will be serving both the central Brockton Clinic and the Paisley & Mildmay satellite Clinics. Paul Crysler was one of the recruitment committee members who brought Dr. Simenhoff to the Paisley Clinic site. “He certainly wasinterested in the Paisley Clinic when we took him to the site and described what it would have inside. He seems a very fine fellow and I’m sure everyone will like him.” At the Paisley building, site work has beencontinuing. The foundation has been completed and as of the last day of May, the prefab roof trusses were stacked near the foundation, just waiting for framing to begin. The rezoning mix-up seems to have been resolved. Bruce County Planning Department made their recommendations to the municipality and on May 26 Arran-Elderslie Council passed the bylaw rezoning the property for the clinic. Fundraising for the Clinic continues. On May 24th a very successful Clinic Classic golf tournament earned $6200.00 for the building fund. The total donations and pledges are now getting close to the estimated completion cost of $320,000. Should the funds raised exceed the committee’s fundraising goal, any excess money will be held in reserve until the clinic is completed (furnished, landscaped, signed, etc.) and inoperation. As stated at the beginning of the fundraising campaign, any leftover funds would then be used for doctor recruitment.

Paisley health Clinic Underway

May 24, 2009

May 2008

After another month of very generous donations and the overwhelming community support of the Paisley Health Clinic Committee’s fundraising efforts, the Clinic Building Fund now stands at just over $308,000, tantalizingly close to the Committee’s $320,000 goal. I spoke with Arran-Elderslie Chief Building Officer Craig Johnston on Thursday Apr. 24th and he sounded pretty up for the project. He stated that Domm Construction was ready to start and the completion date was still set for the end of July. The site had been surveyed, the zoning change was well underway with the County P la nning Department, the conditional building permit had been issued. In fact, the first really exciting sign that things were getting under way was the delivery of the outhouse to the worksite on that same day. The very next day, the high hoe was dropped off at the site and by that afternoon the foundation hole had been dug. Johnston also said that he has been investigating trees for the site (on his own time) and hopes to have 30 to 40 maples going onto the site later this summer as a memorial grove – he has already had a number of enquiries from people wishing to sponsor memorial trees. It’s been one year since that first public meeting at the community centre and there have been quite a few twists and turns on the road getting here, but construction is finally under way! CB

May 23, 2009

The Paisley Advocate January/February 2008

I f things have appeared quiet regarding the Paisley Health Clinic lately, be assured there has been plenty of action going of behind the scenes.

Tenders In
On Dec. 18 members of the Clinic Committee, the Building Committee and building designer Craig Johnston met to open the tender submissions. On Jan. 4, the Building Committee interviewed the two contractors who had submitted the best bids. Their recommendation was passed along to the Clinic Committee at their Jan. 9 meeting. The preferred tender was then passed along to the municipality for final approval at the Jan. 14 Council Meeting. (Unfortunately this paper went to press before that date so the name of the contractor cannot be released here.) Fundraising Continues With a firm price for the building, the Hea lthClinic Committee has now been able to set a fundraising goal. With allowance for furnishings, landscaping, paving, etc. the fundraising goal has been set at $320,000. With current donations and pledges standing at $268K, the fundraising committee will still be pursuing both community and corporate donations. On April 12, the committee will presenting a Giggles Comedy night fundraiser. Here’s an opportunitysupport the clinic and have fun too.
See you there!
